    Course Description

A face-to-face 2-day course delivered by two of the UK’s leading switchgear and transformer experts Elizabeth MacKenzie and Kevin Butter.

Elizabeth has more than 37 years’ experience in transformer design and engineering and sits on the BSI PEL/14 committee for transformers. She is also the Additional Regular Member for CIGRE A2 (Transformers) for the UK and member of CIGRE Working Group A2.68 Failure Survey of Lower Voltage Generator Step Up Transformers installed in Wind farms and Photovoltaic Parks.

Kevin has more than 36 years’ experience in the electricity transmission and distribution industry. His experience includes the preparation of specifications and assessments of switchgear from LV up to 420 kV, SATCOMs and HVDC equipment. For over 20 years Kevin was an active member of the ENA switchgear Assessment Panel.

Focusing on switchgear/transformer design deployed in the UK, this course offers delegates the chance to really understand what matters when it comes to making decisions about transformer/switchgear design, operation and management.

What engineering aspects cause issues with design? Delegates will take away the answers and practical tools to enable them to be competent in how to specify transformers/switchgear for renewable substations.

    Course Topics

Design Considerations for LV & HV (up to 36kV rated systems)

    ·        Essential Legal requirements, Standards and Specifications for switchgear and transformers operating at renewable sites

    ·        Type test requirements

    ·        Network parameter requirements

    ·        Important Civil and Cable Aspects

    PROCUREMENT ISSUES

    ·        Preparing specifications

    ·        Reviewing tender bids

    ·        Factory acceptance testing

    ·        Quality control issues

    ·        Installation and Commissioning risks

    ENVIRONMENT & FAILURE MODES

    ·        Humidity and Temperature

    ·        Review many failure modes experienced at renewable sites

    ·        Maintenance essentials going forward

    Target Audience

The course is designed to give delegates a solid understanding of renewable substation design and operation concepts, as well as providing experienced engineers with the knowledge they need to get the most from electrical systems.

    Delegates could be:

    ·      Working in DNOs, IDNOs, ICPs who are designing or assessing aspects of renewable substation design

    ·        Recent entrants to the electricity industry seeking an understanding of distribution switchgear and transformer design

    ·        Asset owners involved in network design who wish to extend their knowledge to renewable substation design

    ·        Technical staff wishing to understand the key elements of renewable substation design to provide assurance and confidence when designing renewable sites

    ·        Engineers already involved in switchgear and transformer substation design who are seeking the next level of knowledge
